The trek to Kanchenjunga base camp begins with a flight to Bhadrapur, a city in the eastern part of Nepal. Essential Information

Climate and the best time to trek

The Kanchenjunga region offers a variety of landscapes and altitudes, and the climate varies accordingly. In general, fall and spring are considered the best season. The weather is moderate in these seasons, and also calm.

It is difficult to walk in winter as the temperature becomes unbearably low. The days are cold and windy, and the nights are even colder. There are snowfalls and blizzards in this region. Therefore, it becomes almost impossible to walk in the winter.

The hike is also tricky due to the rain in summer. The path can become slippery, and the view often darkens.

Physical fitness and experience requirements

Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is a challenging hike suitable for passionate hikers who can run at least 5-6 hours a day. In a few days, you will even have to walk 8 to 9 hours. Walking at higher altitudes is more demanding than at lower elevations. However, if you are in excellent health with average fitness, a positive attitude, self-confidence, and strong determination, you can carry out the walk successfully. Exercising and jogging regularly for a few months before travelling is a good idea, as it improves your strength and stability. Previous hiking experience is preferred, but technical knowledge is not required. You must consult your doctor before booking this hike

Proposed preparation

  • Exercises Cardiovascular exercises like running, biking, jogging, push-ups, and push-ups for three months, 4-5 days a week before your trip is convenient.
  • You should also participate in the development of core strength and muscular endurance during strength training.
  • Walking the hills in different weather conditions is excellent preparation for this trip.
  • If you have access, kayaking and swimming can be a beneficial way to develop the strength and endurance necessary for this journey.

Acclimatization

The Kanchenjunga base camp itinerary is planned with a high level of knowledge of AMS (acute mountain sickness). Increasing too rapidly at higher altitudes leads to disease that is severe enough to cause death. The higher altitude, the less oxygen is in the air. For example, at the height of more than 5000 m, there is 50% less oxygen than at sea level. Therefore, your bodies need many days to adapt to an environment with less oxygen. An extra day for acclimatization is provided during this trip.

FAQ

How Difficult is Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek?

Kanchenjunga trekking falls in excessive degrees of trekking. You have to walk 6to7 hours at an altitude of more than 3000 m for several days. Climatic conditions become harsh at high altitudes, and the temperature drops and sometimes even below freezing. Due to the decrease in atmospheric pressure, altitude sickness also occurs at elevations above 3,000 m. The walk offers a high level of fitness. You should also be mentally fit and ready to go on this hike.
